The abbey and Benedictine monastery at Jumieges was founded in 654 A.D. 1100 years of tumultuous history including destruction during the Viking invasion of Normandy, occupation by the English and yielding an Archbishop of Canterbury finally led to its final forced abandonment during the French Revolution. Nowadays, the ruins are a major tourist attraction in the Seine-Maritime Departement in Normandy, France.
