A view of a typical Ksar in southeastern Morocco. Ksars were fortified villages and can be found in many parts of southern Morocco. Usually, the wealthiest and most powerful Berber family in the town lived in the main house of the Ksar and the village grew around it in typical adobe blockhouse fashion. These towns were abandoned whenever there were earthquakes or floods and the whole population moved on to "safer" ground where they had another go at the hard life in the Moroccan desert.
