Headstone Tunnel canvas
The Headstone Tunnel, built by the Midland Railway, was opened on 30th May 1863. At 487m (533 yards) it is the longest tunnel through the Wye Valley in the Peak District, UK on the line that formed part of the main rail link between London and Manchester. It closed in 1968 following the Beeching cuts. The Peak District National Park Authority took ownership of the route in 1981 and created the 9-mile Monsal Trail which is popular with walkers and cyclists. This tunnel was opened in 2011.
