Photographed when I saw the sun was highlighting the coppery colours of our witch hazel shrub. Spot focusing on the highlighted part of the flowers darkened the background, making a lovely backdrop for the witch hazel, This variety is Hamamelis x Intermedia 'Jelena'. "Witch hazel" was used in England as a synonym for Wych Elm, Ulmus glabra; usage of the twigs as divining rods, just as hazel twigs were used in England, may also have, by folk etymology, influenced the "witch" part of the name.
