Bedford Town Bridge canvas
Way back in the extremely dim and distant past the first bridge was a wooden structure. The Great Bridge as it was then known was built in the 12th century and had a chapel which fell into disrepair and was rebuilt and dedicated to St Thomas; a change which caused a dispute between the townspeople and the Sheriff. The bridge was strengthened in the 1500s with stone from the demolished church of St Peter of Dunstable, which was on the site opposite to St Mary's Church. The chapel became a lock up
