Bedford Suspension Bridge canvas
There was a bridge on this site long before 1888. There was a bridge in 1765 – almost certainly an agricultural one linking the meadows. The creation of the embankment as we see it today was the inspiration of three times Mayor of Bedford Joshua Hawkins, who also created Bedford Park, and the suspension bridge was one of the main attractions.
