The Parish Church of Saint Mary the Virgin is located on Lindisfarne, the Holy Island, joined to the Northumbrian coast by a causeway which is only uncovered at low tide. The church, parts of which date from the 7th century, is reputed to stand on the site of a monastery founded by St Aidan in 635 AD. At the east end of the chancel, above the high alter, is the magnificent 19th century stained glass window depicting The Ascension.
