The Latvian Riflemen Monument, Riga is apparently a very controversial statue in the republic. The riflemen fought with Lenin in the Russian Revolution in 1917 and some became Lenin’s personal bodyguards. Latvia was briefly independent in 1918. The monument was errected in 1970. Some Latvians would love to have the statue pulled down as they reguard it as a reminder of the old communist regime of the Soviet Union. Others see it as a tribute to Latvians. Latvia finally gained full independence
