Dambusters Lancasters practising in Essex canvas
The RAF 617 Squadron rehearsed for Operation Chastise, the attack on the Ruhr dams in May 1943, by practising on three reservoirs in England. As the night of the raid neared they concentrated on the Eyebrook (Uppingham), and this one - Abberton in Essex, referred to in squadron records as "Colchester Lake".
