At low tide it is possible to cross the mud flats that separate the Holy Island of Lindisfarne from the mainland in Northumberland by following the ancient route known as Pilgrims' Way. The 3 ½ mile route is staked out by a straight line of wooden poles that have been guiding pilgrims for 1,300 years. The crossing is dangerous and the route has refuge boxes for stranded walkers.
