Wynch Bridge, Bowlees, Teesdale picture board
The Grade II* listed pedestrian Wynch Bridge at Bowlees just below Low Force. It was constructed in 1830 to allow miners living in Holwick to cross the river. This is the third incarnation of a bridge at this location. The original was built in 1741 and is said to be the first suspension bridge of any kind in the UK. It was washed a way in a flood in 1771. A second version collapsed in 1802 under the weight of too many people crossing it at the same time. One fatality resulted.
