A very colourful and vibrant portrait of a male Mandrill. Charles Darwin wrote in his book "The Descent of Man" "no other member of the whole class of mammals is coloured in so extraordinary a manner as the adult male mandrill". Males are not only more colourful than females but are much bigger than they are too. These differences in characteristics are known as sexual dimorphism. With the female having the pick of the best male, size and colour matter! This was taken at Colchester Zoo.
