Remains of East Blockhouse, near Angle in Pembroke canvas
This is a view of the remains of East Blockhouse taken from the Pembrokeshire coast path near Angle. The sun was just setting behind St Anne's Head on a stormy september evening. It was King Henry VIII who ordered construction of two stone “blockhouses”, in 1539, equipped with guns, to guard the entrance to the strategically important Milford Haven waterway. At this time Britain feared an attempted invasion by the French and Spanish.
