The Glenfinnan Monument canvas
The Glenfinnan Monument at the head of Loch Shiel, Scotland, was erected in 1815 to mark the place where Prince Charles Edward Stuart ("Bonnie Prince Charlie") raised his standard, at the beginning of the 1745 Jacobite Rising. Despite advancing as far as Derby and being close to victory, ill advice prompted his retreat and eventual defeat eight months later at the Battle of Culloden (16 April 1746). History might have turned out very differently.
