The manipulation of this photograph is an attempt to capture what turned out to be a surreal day. The objective of the days trek was on the other side of this pass – but this is as far as me and my fellow trekkers got. Surfaces underfoot, which had been increasingly unstable became as if fluid. We could not grip onto anything - and then suddenly, nearby rocks shattered. We had to retreat. Technically the day was a failure, but my enduring memory is of the bond formed between my fellow trekkers.
