Glasgow’s Merchant City was the first part of the city to be formally planned. Wealth generated by tobacco trading (amongst other things) meant that the city suddenly expanded; the layout proposed was a rough grid, and at the northern end of each street a building of distinctive qualities was proposed, this being one: the Hutcheson Hospital (1802).
