Library of Celsus through the Gate of Augustus canvas
The Library of Celsus is an ancient Roman building at Ephesus in Turkey. The library was built by his son, Gaius Julius Aquila, as a funerary monument for his father, former proconsul of Asia, Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus and completed in 135 AD. The Library of Celsus was the third-largest library in the Roman world, behind only Alexandria and Pergamum, and is believed to have held around 12,000 scrolls. Celsus is buried in a crypt beneath the library. View through the Gate of Augustus.
