Class A3 steam locomotive Flying Fox Circa 1964 canvas
A digital artwork depicting the steam locomotive Flying Fox as it would have been seen at the end of its service life in 1964 with double chimney and smoke deflectors. Originally LNER No. 4475, built in 1923, it was based at Kings Cross through to 1940. Flying Fox had just over 41 years service and by the time it was taken out of service, on Boxing Day 1964 it had attained the highest recorded mileage of any A1/A3 class at 2,642,860 miles!
