Cramond Kirk and Kirkyard, Edinburgh mono canvas
Cramond Kirk stands in the area once occupied by a Roman Fort built by Emperor Septimius Severus in AD208 to support the invasion of northern Britain. The Romans abandoned Cramond, and Scotland, in AD212, leaving a significant settlement behind. By about 600 a building on the site of the Roman Fort was being used for Christian worship. The present church is the latest in a series which have stood on the same spot. The church tower is the earliest part, which is thought to date back to the 1400s.
