Gruinard Bay, Wester Ross, Scotland. canvas
Guinard Bay is a beautiful and remote bay in North-west Scotland. Gruinard Island was used as a biological warfare experiment in 1942 when sheep on the island were exposed to anthrax. The sheep all died, but the anthrax strain was so virulent that infected land would be uninhabitable for decades, and so, thankfully, this was never deployed as a weapon. Gruniard Island was declared "off limits", until in 1986, the government began cleaning up Gruinard Island, declaring it "safe" in 1990.
