Dowley Gap - 01 canvas
Dowley Gap is a section of the Leeds & Liverpool canal between Bingley and Saltaire in West Yorkshire. Building work commenced in 1770 and took 46 years to complete before the 127 mile long canal was opened in 1816. It formed an important link across the Pennine hills for the export of Yorkshire textiles through the port of Liverpool and also coal for the ships and limestone for the construction industry. Today the canal is popular with boaters, hikers, cyclists and many other liesure seekers.
