St. Michael and All Angels Church, Hubberholme. canvas
The mainly 12th century church stands by the River Wharfe in Yorkshire's Langstrothdale Valley. It was built on the site of a forest chapel. Inside is a beautiful wooden rood loft which escaped Elizabeth 1's orders to destroy all such objects. The pews, choir stalls and chairs were made by Thompson of Kilburn, 'the mouseman'. The trademark carving of a mouse can be found in many places within the church. The church and village pub were frequented by J.B Priestley whose ashes are buried there.
