Halfpenny Bridge Lechlade canvas
Halfpenny Bridge at Lechlade in Gloucestershire, right at the southern tip of the Cotswolds' This bridge is the last road crossing over the River Thames before the river becomes un-navigable. Just further upstream through the arch it gradually becomes narrower and shallower - no place for river cruisers! This bridge dates from 1792 and its name stems from the toll paid by pedestrians to cross, this ending in 1839. Lechlade is a market town very close to the border with Oxfordshire.
