Eileen Donan Castle canvas
The Castle you see today is the fourth version. Bishop Donan chose the spot in 634AD to settle on it and create a monastic cell. The first castle was later established in the 13th century by Alexander II to protect the area from the Vikings. In 1719 it was involved in one of the Jacobite uprisings. It was heavily damaged and lay as a ruin for 200 years. The castle that you see today was reconstructed as a family home between 1912 and 1932 by Lt Col John MacRae-Gilstrap, and incorporated much
