Churchill Barrier, Orkney. picture board
Scapa Flow was an important British naval base during the second world war. In 1939 a German U-boat entered Scapa Flow and sunk the battleship HMS Royal Oak with torpedoes. In response, the Churchill Barriers, a set of four causeways, were built during the 1940's to close off various entry points to Scapa Flow. The Barriers now serve as road links between the mainland and some smaller islands.
