This is a botanical photograph of a whole plant of Snake's Head Fritillary, Fritillaria meleagris, showing roots, bulb,stem, leaves and flower, isolated against a white background. I am always amazed that such a small bulb can produce such a sumptuous flower. The flower has a chequered pattern in shades of purple, or is sometimes pure white. The name Fritillaria comes from the Latin fritillus meaning dice-box.
