The Old Brewery Stables canvas
Standing at County Lock near the centre of Reading, Berkshire, looking across the Kennet to the old stable block, once belonging to Simonds Brewery which occupied this entire area. The Kennet Navigation here would have been busy with narrow boats and brewers' drays transporting barrels of beer to the local area and beyond. The Kennet Navigation and canal was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link Bristol with the Thames and London, the brewery making full use of this highway.
