Beauly Priory - West Front canvas
Beauly Priory was a French monastic community founded about 1230 at what is now Beauly, near Inverness, alledgedly by Alexander II of Scotland or John Bisset (a local landowner). It's likely the French monks gave the location and the river the name "beau lieu" ("beautiful place") which passed into English as Beauly. It became Cistercian in 1510 but fell into ruin at the time of the dissolution of the monasteries and the priory's lands were given to the bishop of Ross by royal charter in 1634.
