Nottingham Castle canvas
Nottingham Castle, Nottingham, England, UK. The first castle was built by William the Conquerer in 1067 and was a wooden structure. It was rebuilt in stone by Henry II in 1170. In 1642 Charles I raised his standard outside the castle walls and began the English Civil War. Between 1651 and 1678 the castle was demolished and rebuilt as a Ducal mansion. In 1831 the building was attacked, looted and set alight. In 1875 reconstruction work was carried out to adapt the building for use as a museum.
