The Incas constructed a trail to the summit and constructed a temple that is said to have been the residence for the high priest and the local virgins. It is possible still to use the same (very steep in places) trail to this day. To get a shot without others in the view it is advisable to stay overnight in Aguas Calientes and get the earliest shuttle bus possible. The Incas built Machu Picchu around 1450
