Garston Lock On The Kennet Navigation canvas
Garston Lock which lies between Theale and Burghfield on the Kennet is one of the only two remaining original turf-sided locks on this waterway. It was constructed between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury. For boaters - it has a rise and fall of 2.29m (7ft 7ins). It has sloping sides and boats are kept in the middle with steel rails. This navigable section of the river Kennet is known as The Kennet Navigation and links with the Kennet and Avon Canal.
