Whitby at Night picture board
A view across the River Esk at Whitby at night. Whitby is a seaside town straddling the estuary of the River Esk in North Yorkshire. It has been important for fishing, tourism and jet. The ruins of the abbey on the east cliff are much photographed along with the view from the 199 steps leading up to it from the riverside. The town also has a strong literary tradition and has featured in literary works, television and cinema, most famously in Bram Stoker's novel Dracula.
