To the north Pendennis Point looks out over the area of water known as the Carrick Roads; to the east towards St Anthony Lighthouse, St Mawes and its castle; to the south, the Lizard and the treacherous Manacle Rocks, the Helford River; and then westward across to Falmouth's beaches. The Carrick Roads has long being a point of huge strategic importance which is why it is flanked by two castles and is one of the key European deep-water anchorages today.
