War Memorials sprang up all over the country during and following The Great War. In 1920 the Mayor, Alderman W Raine decided to raise the £6,000 needed by means of a Shilling Fund - public subscription. The design of Victory, submitted by Mr Ray, from the school of Art, was chosen and it was erected in Burdon Road next to Mowbray Park.
