The Former Governors House canvas
The former Governor’s House, a castellated structure situated next to Calton Old Burial Ground on the edge of Calton Hill, in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Governor’s House is all that remains of the jail, at the time the largest prison in Scotland, which once occupied the site where St Andrew’s House now stands. On the left, in Calton Old Burial Ground is the enormous Obelisk by Thomas Hamilton (1784 – 1858) which remembers the Political Martyrs of 1793, who were ‘transported’ for sedition.
