Above Padworth Lock picture board
The scene just above Padworth Lock near Aldermaston Wharf on the Kennet and Avon Canal captured during a summer evening. This lock, number 96, was constructed between 1718 and 1723 by John Hore of Newbury as a turf-sided lock. During the canal's restoration in the 1980s it was rebuilt in brick and has a 5 foot rise and fall. The canal, which has 105 locks, was originally constructed to join the Thames at Reading to Bristol using the Kennet and Avon rivers at each end.
