Bridging the River Cree picture board
Seen from the Market Town of Newton Stewart in Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland, Cree Bridge crosses the River Cree to the village of Minnigaff. The first bridge was built in 1745 but was washed away in floods in 1806. The current bridge was built in 1813. It is likely that Minnigaff was already well established by the 1200s, but Newton Stewart was built as a planned town by the Stewart family of Castle Stewart in 1677, and by 1685 it had overtaken Minnigaff in size and importance.
