Canongate Mercat Cross canvas
The Canongate Mercat Cross (or Burgh Cross) stands in the Yard of the Canongate Kirk on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Scotland. The date on the plaque reads 1128, however this refers to the date from which the Canongate was a separate burgh to Edinburgh. In the 1850s, the Canongate was incorporated within the city of Edinburgh boundaries. There may have been a Mercat Cross in the Canongate in 1128, however, this one is thought to date from the 16th Century.
