Dorchester Abbey Churchyard canvas
The picturesque churchyard at Dorchester Abbey in Oxfordshire. The abbey dates from 1140 when Alexander, Bishop of Lincoln, founded it for the Arrouaisian order of Augustinian Canons. The village of Dorchester-on -Thames, originally a Roman town, actually sits on the River Thame, the Thames lying across adjacent fields. The abbey is situated in the centre of the village.
