Dorchester Abbey Buildings canvas
The buildings within the grounds of the Dorchester Abbey church of St Peter and St Paul in Oxfordshire. Dorchester-on-Thames was a Roman settlement and became a bishopric in about 634, the first bishop being St Birinus. The abbey was founded in 1140 by Alexander, Bishop of Lincoln for the Arronaisian order of Augustinian Canons who wore white habits rather than the usual black. The abbey lies in the centre of Dorchester next to the River Thame - the Thames being reached across adjacent fields.
