This one was sunning itself on a path by the Nile near Luxor, where they are rarer than south of the Aswan Dam. Nile monitors (Varanus niloticus) generally grow to about 120 to 160 cm (3 ft 11 in to 5 ft 3 in) in length, the largest specimens being 244 cm (8 ft 0 in).
