Huers Hut Newquay acrylic
Dating from the 14th century the hut may have originally been a hermitage, the hermit possibly being entrusted with the lighting of the beacon fire for the guidance of ships. Later it was used by a Huer, who would raise a hue and cry by the use of a horn to alert fishermen to the arrival of shoals of pilchards. The Huer would then direct them to the fish by means of hand signals.
