Tourism is a major industry. The city has a number of ancient sites, including its Roman Hippodrome which was added to UNESCOs list of World Heritage Sites in 1979. The name of the city means rock after the rocky formation on which the town was originally built. The city is called Sour in Arabic and Sur in Phoenicia
