The Red Land canvas
Serabit El Khadim is a locality in the south-west Sinai Peninsula where turquoise was mined extensively in antiquity, mainly by the ancient Egyptians. Ancient Egyptians divided their country into two types of land: the "red land," which meant desert, and the "black land, which was the fertile Nile Valley region. This very remote area is one of the best examples of red land.
