Above and beyond: Jimmy Ward VC acrylic
In July 1941 Vickers Wellington L7818 of 75 (New Zealand) Squadron RAF was returning from a bombing operation when it was attacked and damaged by a German night fighter, starting a fire in the starboard wing. Second pilot James Ward climbed out on to the wing to try to stop the flames, an act of heroism which earned him the Victoria Cross.
