Gyeongbok Palace is located in northern Seoul, South Korea. First constructed in 1395, it was later burned and abandoned for almost three centuries, Reconstructed in 1867, it was the main and largest palace of the Five Grand Palaces built by the Joseon Dynasty. Owing to its status as the symbol of national sovereignty, Gyeongbokgung was demolished during the Japanese occupation of the early 20th century, but has gradually been reconstructed.
