Hawker Typhoons diving canvas
The Hawker Typhoon (Tiffy in RAF slang) did not live up to expectations as an interceptor but from 1943 it evolved into a fearsome ground-attack aircraft, cleared to carry two 500lb and later 1,000lb bombs - or up to eight rocket projectiles, as shown here. The picture depicts Typhoons from No. 247 (China British) Squadron, sporting D-Day invasion stripes, beginning an attack dive in June 1944.
