Aira Force, Cumbria canvas
Aira Force is situated in the Lake District in Cumbria close to Ullswater. The main fall, imaged here, drops 70 feet from below the stone bridge to the river below. Its name derives from the old Norse word "eyrara" meaning a gravel-banked stream or river. The area around the force is a Victorian parkland designed for the Howard family who lived in nearby Greystoke Hall. The poet William Wordsworth was clearly familiar with the falls as they appear in three of his poems.
