Wellington Pit, acrylic
Towering above the harbour at Whitehaven in Cumbria Wellington Pit was by far the most spectacular of pits. It was built in the shape of a castle with a great keep ,tunnels and an enormouse crenulated walls.Its twin shafts were sunk in 1840-1845. The only remaining buildings are the Wellington lodge which is now used as a base for the coastguard and the candlestick chimney ventilation for the workings..
