A walk up the avenue canvas
An elderly couple begin the walk up the leafy avenue, away from the ruined Houghton House, near Ampthill, Bedfordshire. The house, built as a hunting lodge in 1615, for Mary Herbert, Countess of Pembroke, was dismantled some years after her death by The Duke of Bedford. The stone used in its construction has been eroded badly by the acidic emission from the now closed, nearby brick factories.
